Why the CVITP Matters
Every year, hundreds of thousands of low‑income Canadians rely on volunteers to help them file their taxes — and unlock the benefits they need to make ends meet. Filing a tax return is the gateway to many poverty‑reducing benefits in Canada. Without it, families can lose access to thousands of dollars in supports.

Why Filing Matters
- Filing a tax return automatically triggers payment of many income‑tested benefits, such as the Canada Child Benefit, the GST/HST credit, and the Canada Workers Benefit.
- The CRA’s Notice of Assessment, produced after filing, is also required to apply for many other federal and provincial or territorial benefits such as the Canada Disability Benefit and the Canada Dental Care Plan.
- For low‑income Canadians, filing is not just about taxes — it is about access to essential income supports.
The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), run by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), is the cornerstone of free tax filing assistance. It is the CRA’s main tool to help low‑income Canadians file their returns and access the benefits they are entitled to.
